Darcy's Journal: She earned them all! (Brownie Badges)

Darcy's first badge was "Be a Chef". She already helped in the kitchen a lot, so it was really just a matter of documenting it. In fact many badges were like that for her, such as:

Lend a hand at home

Darcy helped with spring cleaning by washing walls. She also helped clean crystals off the kitchen chandelier and glue some broken object.

Money Talk

Darcy decided on something she wanted to buy, then saved her money from returning empty cans the tooth fairy and selling some toys. Finally she purchased her item - a sewing kit!

Winter is great: A snow Girl Guide!

Pet pals

This was very easy for Darcy as she always looks after her pets. Pictured above, clockwise are: Emerald, Ollie, Sea Salt on Darcy's shoulder, and Eric.

Terrific Trash

Darcy made a bird toy made out of egg cartons and beads.

Some badges were harder to earn, like wheels. Darcy had been trying to learn to ride on two wheels for some time and she really pushed herself to learn, mainly so she could get the badge!

Community Counts was another hard one - for both of us! We volunteered to do the spring clean up of the garden at the front of our school. Well, it was a bigger job that we expected! Pictured above is just one side of the stairs; below some of the garbage we removed.

Grow your Garden was fun, but took some research to figure out how to make a terrarium.

Bird watcher

Darcy made a bird feeder, filled it and hung it outside the porch door. I think she counted about 40 birds at it in one hour! She used what already knew and our field guide to identify all of them!

Be Aware

Darcy helped Daddy get a fire started and learned about fuel, oxygen and heat.

Weather Tracker

Darcy tracked the weather and kept a chart/journal for two weeks. The second week there was NO rain, but the first week there was a TORNADO!

When she started her second (and last) year of Brownies there were still some badges that were pretty easy and/or fun to do, so Darcy kept working on them.

Food Power.

We eat only healthy food for one week and Darcy tried something new, mango.

She likes it!

Darcy and I often walk to school, so creating a walking bus for Help Our Planet wasn't too hard.

The hardest part was finding a Brownie to walk with. We live in a regional area and there are long distances between many of the girls. We finally made it work with one other Brownie.

Finding a pen pal was another fairly simple task. Darcy wrote to my friend's daughter in Africa!

Darcy worked her way through some more badges and finally set a goal: ALL OF THEM! Say what?

We were starting to run out of badges for activities we already do or that are easy to fit into to our schedules, now we just had the hard ones left and she wants to do them?!? How could I say no?

So we went on 2 hikes, learned about American Sign Language, Canadian Inventions, drew a map of our neighborhood, learned the compass points and how to use a compass. We even learned how to use an analog watch as a compass! Darcy made puppets and sculptures and did science experiments! She interviewed an artist and learned how to use two tools with Daddy. Darcy even wrote a jingle for Write On and told jokes for Tell It.
